Artist Fiona Omeenyo’s imagery is based on key stories from the Umpila language group, and relate to their history, their ancestor spirits, and to their relationship to their land.
For her sculptural commission which was installed at International Education Services Spring Hill, Fiona has selected a group of four figures evocative of kinship and inseparability.
“FAMILY” was a challenging large scale sculpture that required traditional skills, both hand and machine to deliver on the artists vision.
The main ribs of the sculpture were fabricated from 10mm aluminium, a CAD CAM cut profile then hand rolled to the artist design. The aluminium faces were fabricated on our Permasign letter machine and were tack welded to the hand rolled ribs to form the overall shape. It was then primed and masked for an application of a specific colour 2 pack paint. “FAMILY” was then slotted onto a 16mm aluminium base plate and fixed to a custom designed seat – with additional bespoke seating around the sculpture in the external courtyard. All the seating has a steel framework with aluminium cladding and faux timber tiles.
