Broken Hill’s wealth is not only in its mines. A rich vein of creativity has shaped this city into a unique destination offering many tourism experiences. Over the last 25 years, the city has been reinvented as a living museum where visitors can experience both the past and present.
Broken Hill City Council engaged Brisbane-based Buchan, a global team of creative experts, to design and revitalise the Silver City’s walking and driving trails. The city’s story is told through the narratives of those who came from all over Australia and around the world to make their fortunes or to create change.
Albert Smith Signs was privileged to be engaged by Buchan for this intricate project, bringing their design concepts to life to enhance Broken Hill’s creativity and history. Our involvement in the project included:
Manufacturing Process: The design was unique and detailed, with the overarching criteria that drove the manufacturing process focused on brand presentation, quality, longevity, and maintainability. Our biggest challenge was the number of architectural elements to be manufactured and the varied installation sites.
Interpretive and Wayfinding Signage: Manufacturing signage from aluminium plate, water jet cut to the required shapes and sizes, welded to the base plates, and powder coated with Dulux Duratex elements weathered steel. Stunning ASPrint graphics were printed onto aluminium panels using 3M digital print media, with a protective clear coat finish, and attached to the specified posts and totems.
Local Collaboration: We engaged Paul Bartlett, a local Broken Hill building company, for site surveys and installation of the product.
Heroes, Larrikins and Visionaries Walking Trail: A 1.7-kilometre easy walk featuring interpretive signage that guides visitors through Broken Hill’s vibrant history and characters.
Silver Trail Drive: A 40-kilometre drive covering the main residential and commercial areas of central and north Broken Hill, highlighting the rich and unique heritage of major buildings, residential areas, parks, and mines.
Large Free-Standing 3D Sign Panels: These panels were positioned in major city parks. They were manufactured from 16mm aluminium plate with router-cut letters and cut-out silhouette layers to achieve a 3D effect, powder coated with Dulux Duratex elements weathered steel. The interpretive panels were printed with 3M ASPrint graphics, with clear protection over them, and fixed to the free-standing panels.
