In stark contrast to the city skyline, Queensland sculptor Simone Eisler’s 7-metre high living, growing artwork, masquerading as a manicured topiary-like horse, covered in native plants, formed the centrepiece of “Curiocity Brisbane” on Southbank’s riverside green.
Resonating with the myths of the Trojan Horse, “The Climate Wars” sculpture delivered a powerful message about nurturing the future of plants and seed banks within a changing climatic world. Made from 10 different species and over 2000 plants, it aimed not only to attract attention but to promote discussion to safeguard the environment we live in.
Crafting the Trojan Horse for a Changing World
Albert Smith Signs was honoured to carry out the works on this project, ensuring the successful execution of this intricate and meaningful piece. From artist concept to design agreement and completion, the project had a two-month timeline. SolidWorks was the design tool used to conceptualise, create, and transform innovative ideas into a 3D model of the complex structure and parts, which featured hundreds of connection points.
Simultaneously, the plant cladding logistics took place over several months. Selected plants were initially planted and nurtured in pots, then transferred to grow in durable fabric pockets that lined the outside of the horse’s body four weeks prior to attachment to the sculpture.
The Trojan Horse measured 8 metres in length and 7 metres in height. Its frame was laser cut from 2mm aluminium, while the body cladding was made from 1.6mm aluminium. The starting point was the torso to form the base shape to which the supporting ribs were welded, with the body cladding hung and spot welded to the ribs.
Despite the complexity and scale of the project, the manufacture took just one week and was divided into four modules: torso, chest, head, and tail. As a final check, the horse was fully assembled in the manufacturing facility before being transported to Southbank, where it proudly stood on specially manufactured scaffolding.
At Albert Smith Signs, we operate a fully equipped fabrication department with an experienced team of tradespeople. This project showcases our capability to bring ambitious and intricate designs to life.
