The Brisbane City Council’s Vibrant Laneways projects recently declared Fish Lane off Grey St as Brisbane’s first shared zone. A 10km/h speed limit allows delivery vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to get that little bit friendlier. The Vibrant Laneways art program transforms Brisbane’s laneways into imaginative, fun and engaging spaces. Exciting public art is exhibited in each laneway.
Brisbane artist Daniel Templeman is known for his public art works at Brisbane locations, including the Brisbane Magistrates Court and the Southbank Educational Precinct. Daniel’s work invites us to question its construction, physicality, finish and ultimately what it reveals or conceals
FOIL- does that!
FOIL maps light across its surface and acts as a conduit between the light source, one’s location and the artwork.
Albert Smith, as sign makers, was proud to once again partner with Daniel Templeman to interpret his artistic vision and create practical solutions for design construction, manufacture and installation.
FOIL is constructed from 100 identical tiles of routed polycarbonate sheet, with a 2 pack metallic white silver coating. Daniels vision of the shimmering effect was challenging to achieve and we trailed various route patterns, widths and spacing’s to achieve the final effect. The white silver coating delivered Daniel’s ultimate vision of reflecting brightly off the full face and being very dark in the shadow areas.
FOIL was then attached to ACM panels to give perfect bonding and the ACM panels were fixed to the building façade wall 10m wide and 10m high with no visible fixings. The FOIL tiles needed to be laid out over the 10m square wall to maintain a line effect yet allow a small expansion gap between panels without detracting from the visual appearance and Daniel’s vision
Once again, collaboration between Daniel Templeman (artist) and Smith Signs (signmakers) has delivered an imaginative and outstanding work of art
