The Translational Research Institute (TRI) at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) in Brisbane, is a compelling work of architecture by Wilson Architects and Donovan Hill. Their concept was delivered in partnership with Watpac (construction) and Albert Smith Signs (signmakers). The building signs located on the western and northern elevations were fabricated from perforated aluminium with the design intent to achieve diffused light flare, via warm white LED’s, onto the adjacent surfaces. The illuminated signs have white faces with returns coated to match the copper penny finish which was used extensively on the building.
The building signs on the eastern elevation are non-illuminated, individually fabricated 300mm high letters from 6mm aluminium with folded natural copper inserts.
This project required design and manufacturing innovation to deliver on the vision of Wilson Architects and Donovan Hill for an architecturally designed workplace within the science community.
